Erm.

The internet is a network of machines connected via TCP/IP. The web
is not the internet. Before the web we had usenet (archives are at
http://groups.google.com/ , for example
http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?lnk=nhpsfg&q=alt&qt_s=Search+for+a+group
, and they're still in active use), ftp, telnet, and gopher, which
was the closest thing to the web when it came along.

Just a little history lesson. :)
